In 2017, Cherif got appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Further, appointed 23 April 2013, the Permanent Representative of Chad to the United Nations, His Excellency Mr. Cherif Mahamat Zene presented his credentials to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on September 13 of the same year.

He has a long diplomatic career before his stay in the United Nations. He spent six years (2007-2013) Ambassador of Chad to Ethiopia with jurisdiction over Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Function that ensured simultaneously with that of Representative of Chad to the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa.

M. Cherif Mahamat Zene has a busy career. Before Ambassador, he held several positions of internal responsibility: Diplomatic Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister (2005-2007), Deputy Director of Legal Affairs, documentation and archives at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Assistant Professor at Faculty of Law and economics (University of N'Djamena (1998-2004)) Commercial Director at the National Air company Chad (1997-1998), Head of Department, in charge of diplomatic affairs to the Prime Minister (1994-1997) and Press Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1993-1994).

Ambassador Cherif is more experienced in international political and diplomatic activities. He has participated in several international conferences and high-level missions at sub regional, continental and international (Summits of Heads of State and Government, forums, consultations and technical meetings, expert panels, etc..,).
During his stay in Addis Ababa, it was three times president of the Council for Peace and Security of the African Union (June 2009, June 2010 and September 2011) and directed various subcommittees of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the 'African Union whose subcommittee in charge of multilateral cooperation (strategic partnerships).

Postgraduate University of Kiev State under public international law, the Permanent Representative of Chad to the United Nations speaks 4 languages: French, Arabic, English and Russian. He is a father.
