Remembering Resistance
Berlin commemorates African resistance to German colonialism

A two-meter high memorial plaque has been unveiled in Wilhemstraße in the Central District of Berlin, the seat of the then Imperial Ministry of the Colonies. The plaque commemorates the “Dibobe-Petition”.
The Dibobe-Petition was a petition made by Cameroon-born Martin Quane a Dibobe to the Imperial Ministry of colonies in June 1919. This document symbolizes the collective resistance of the African diaspora against German colonial rule.
The unveiling of the plaque was headed by Berlin’s Senator for Culture, Klaus Lederer, who described the petition to be an “important part of German history”.
