News from Berlin -Only a small number of Asian countries have progressed such positive economic development in recent decades. Vietnam’s key economic goal is to develop into a modern industrial country by 2020. Alongside vast investment promotion, Vietnam plans to significantly develop infrastructure, particularly in the energy and transport sectors. Furthermore, Vietnam is increasingly looking towards attracting foreign investment to act jointly within the framework of international development cooperation.

In the opening speech, Vietnamese Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh praised Germany as the largest European economy with a “system of modern public governance and hi-tech innovations”, which will prove to be a pivotal element in Vietnam’s economic restructuring. Once Vietnam fully joins the ASEAN Free Trade Area and henceforth engages in a free trade agreement with the EU, more promising opportunities will become evident for Germany and Vietnam to cooperate on economic matters. Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit also pointed to successful joint projects such as the Vietnamese-German University, stating his optimism about enhanced cooperation between Berlin and Vietnamese cities such as Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City, especially in areas such as transport infrastructure, water supply and research.
