On September 18, 2024, the US Embassy in Berlin, in collaboration with the American Academy in Berlin, co-hosted a panel discussion at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, focusing on Ukraine's ongoing struggle to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Chargé d'Affaires Meltzer represented the US Embassy at the event, which brought together diplomats, scholars, and journalists to examine the origins and consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The panel, organized in partnership with the Ukrainian and Swedish embassies, featured a keynote address by Professor Michael Kimmage, who provided historical context for the conflict, tracing its roots back to 2008.

Professor Kimmage's presentation shed light on the far-reaching impact of Russian aggression on Europe and transatlantic relations. The subsequent discussion, moderated by Ann-Dorit Boy of DER SPIEGEL, included valuable insights from Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksii Makeiev and Barbara Lippert of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP).

The panelists engaged in a thorough analysis of European decision-making regarding Ukraine and offered strategic recommendations for dealing with Russia. Throughout the event, speakers emphasized the importance of continued international support for Ukraine's defense efforts and the need for a united front against Russian aggression. The US Embassy's active involvement in organizing this panel underscores the United States' dedication to supporting its allies and upholding democratic values in the face of geopolitical challenges
