UK–Germany Collaboration on Peatland Restoration at British Embassy Berlin
British Embassy in Berlin Hosts UK–German Forum on Peatlands and Climate Action
March 18th, 2026On March 10, 2026 the British Embassy Berlin hosted “Bog to the Future”, a reception spotlighting joint UK–German efforts to restore peatlands, an important ecosystem with a key role in climate mitigation and biodiversity. The event brought together scientists, innovators, policymakers and conservation leaders to share technology, insights and collaborative approaches.
The reception was organised in partnership with NABU e.V., one of Germany’s leading nature conservation associations, and showcased how UK and German innovators are using science and technology to support peatland restoration. Peatlands are recognised in Europe as natural climate solutions, storing substantial amounts of carbon and providing habitat for diverse species. The event highlighted state‑of‑the‑art monitoring tools and restoration techniques from both countries, demonstrating practical approaches to reviving degraded ecosystems.
Participants included experts from research institutions and technology organisations involved in peatland monitoring and restoration. Attendees were able to engage with demonstrations, discuss practical challenges and network with peers working on nature‑based climate interventions. The reception emphasised not only technological innovation, but also the value of UK–German cooperation in addressing shared environmental challenges through practical solutions that bridge science, policy and practice.
The event reinforced the role of diplomatic platforms in facilitating cross‑border collaboration on environmental issues that have global relevance. Peatland restoration requires integrated strategies and partnerships that involve research, governmental engagement and civil society — a perspective reflected in ongoing UK–Germany climate dialogues.
“Bog to the Future” demonstrated how UK–German collaboration can advance the restoration of peatlands, an ecosystem critical for climate mitigation, biodiversity, and water management. By bringing together scientists, innovators, policymakers, and conservation leaders, the British Embassy in Berlin, highlighted the importance of combining research, technology, and cross-border cooperation to address shared environmental challenges. The event reinforced the role of diplomatic platforms in fostering practical solutions that benefit both countries and contribute to Europe’s broader climate and biodiversity goals.
