The London Sudan conference was hosted by the United Kingdom on April 15th, with the African Union, the European Union, France and Germany serving as co-chairs. Foreign ministers and high-level representatives from 17 countries, as well as from the League of Arab States and the United Nations, participated in the conference.

The main objectives of the conference were to coordinate the international mediation efforts, increase pressure on the parties to resolve the conflict, and discuss how to improve humanitarian situation and humanitarian funding.

A public uprising in 2019 led to the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir's authoritarian regime, who had ruled from 1989 to 2019. The protests called for the establishment of a democratic government. As part of the projected shift to complete civilian control, the military and civilians joined a "transitional government".

However, in 2021, a coup was initiated by SAF leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader general Mohamad Hamdan Dagalo "Hemedti". Starting from April 2023, disagreements between the two generals quickly escalated, resulting in the nation becoming embroiled in an ongoing state of conflict.

Germany Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock attended the Sudan conference and during her speech, highlighted the tragic events that Sudanese people are facing every day since the conflict started. She reaffirmed Germany's commitment to resolving the humanitarian crisis by announcing:

"To alleviate the suffering of people in the region and to stabilise the situation in the neighbouring countries, Germany, too, is assuming responsibility and will make available an additional 125 million euro in humanitarian assistance, so that international and local aid organisations can get urgently needed food and medicine to those in need."

As Germany is dedicated to encouraging conformity to international humanitarian law, enhancing humanitarian access and safeguarding the civilian populace is a top priority.

She also urged all "external actors" to "use their power responsibly in order to shape a secure and peaceful region".

Finally, she showed support for both the African Union and the United Nations in leading efforts toward a lasting peace. She stated:

"Those who are definitely ready for peace are the people of Sudan, the millions of innocent people. We need them. We need a political process that empowers the Sudanese people, so they can shape their own future."

Germany continues to play an active role in organizing mediation efforts through a variety of venues, and also in creating shared principles among the key players.

The London Sudan Conference draw the attention to the necessity of a common global response to the Sudan's ongoing crisis. As Germany Foreign Ministry Annalena Baerbock, pointed out, if this war continues, "there will not be any winner".
