The Philippine Embassy in Berlin, together with the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt, organized a forum about the modernization of the German Nationality Law and the reacquisition/retention of Philippine Citizenship.

The forum took place at the Philippine Embassy’s Sentro Rizal.

Its goal was to provide an in-depth understanding of recent reforms under the German Law on the Modernization of Nationality Law (StARModG), and the process of reacquiring or retaining Philippine citizenship under Republic Act No. 9225.

The new German law entered into force on the 27th of June this year.

It abandoned the principle of avoiding multiple nationalities, thus allowing Germans to hold more than one nationality.

Matthias Nübold, a specialist migration lawyer, was the forum’s guest speaker.

He highlighted the recent changes and their implications for dual citizenship. The more restrictive points of the new law were also discussed.

In addition, Vice Consul Dana Michelle C. Del Rosario made an overview of Republic Act 9225 which describes the process and requirements for reacquiring or retaining Philippine citizenship abroad.

The Embassy in Berlin and the Consulate in Frankfurt have started accepting and processing applications for dual citizenship under RA 9225 shortly after the StARModG took effect.
