The Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK), in collaboration with the Icheon municipal authorities, is presenting Icheon and Beyond: The Space Within Form from 27 March to 5 June 2026 as part of London Craft Week 2026. The exhibition explores the philosophical and material foundations of Korean ceramics, drawing inspiration from Icheon’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art and its longstanding reputation as a centre of ceramic excellence.

Bringing together 27 practitioners, including 21 Master Artisans from Icheon and six contemporary artists, the exhibition traces the evolution of Korean ceramic traditions. Early works on display reflect the discipline, precision and aesthetic refinement developed over years of practice, embodying the accumulated knowledge of generations. These pieces highlight the central concept underpinning the exhibition—that the essence of a vessel lies not only in its form, but in the space it contains.

The exhibition then transitions into contemporary interpretations, where artists reinterpret traditional techniques through experimental approaches and new narratives. By deconstructing established forms and reimagining the relationship between material and meaning, the participating artists demonstrate the dynamic nature of craft as a living practice. This dialogue between tradition and innovation reflects broader global trends in contemporary ceramics, while maintaining a distinctly Korean artistic identity.

As part of London Craft Week, Icheon and Beyond contributes to cultural diplomacy by fostering exchange between Korean and British craft traditions. It highlights shared values such as material integrity, craftsmanship and attention to process, while strengthening institutional and artistic ties between the two countries. The exhibition also situates Korean ceramics within a wider international framework, promoting greater recognition of its cultural and economic significance within the global creative industries.

In conclusion, Icheon and Beyond: The Space Within Form offers a thoughtful exploration of heritage and innovation in Korean ceramics. By bridging past and present, the exhibition not only celebrates the depth of Korean craftsmanship but also reinforces the role of cultural exchange in building long-term artistic collaboration between Korea and the United Kingdom.
