On June 12, the Ibero-American Institute in Berlin hosted a memorable evening on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Guarania, Paraguay’s most emblematic musical genre. The concert, titled Sonidos del Alma (“Sounds of the Soul”), honored the creation of the genre by José Asunción Flores in 1925 and brought together a diverse audience in a celebration of music, identity and cultural exchange.

Organized by the Embassy of Paraguay in Germany, the event welcomed more than 200 guests, including diplomats, German government officials, members of the international diplomatic corps, Paraguayan expatriates, students, artists and music lovers. The evening opened with remarks by Dr. Clara Ruvituso of the Ibero-American Institute, followed by Ambassador Fernando Acosta Díaz of Paraguay, who highlighted Guarania’s profound role as a symbol of national unity. Ambassador Acosta also underlined Paraguay’s enduring commitment to peace and dialogue, recalling the Chaco Peace Treaty as a milestone in the country’s diplomatic history.

The concert programme featured three distinguished Paraguayan musicians: conductor Diego Sánchez Haase, tenor José Mongelós and clarinetist Enrique Ríos Careaga. Structured in three stages, the performance traced the journey of Paraguayan music—from European classical influences to the lyrical heart of Guarania, and finally to the vibrant rhythms that capture Paraguay’s national spirit.

With Paraguay declaring 2025 as the national year of Guarania, this centennial celebration in Berlin underscored the genre’s timeless relevance and its power to transcend borders. The Embassy of Paraguay expressed gratitude to the Ibero-American Institute for hosting the event in one of Berlin’s most respected cultural venues.
