Amb. Salma Rasheed
H.E. Mrs. Salma Rasheed is a highly distinguished diplomat and public administrator within the foreign policy architecture of the Republic of Maldives. She assumed her high-level duties in Geneva bringing an exceptional track record in multilateral governance, administrative reform, and international relations.
Before her strategic ambassadorial deployment to Geneva, Ambassador Rasheed served in several senior capacities within the government in Malé, including key roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as a critical driver of civil service development. Her professional background is deeply rooted in human resource management, public policy coordination, and international development frameworks. Throughout her career, she has been a strong advocate for the institutional empowerment of small island nations, gender equality, and the integration of sustainable development goals into national legislative frameworks.
History
The diplomatic strategy of the Maldives in International Geneva is perhaps one of the most passionate and vital in the entire UN system, fundamentally driven by the island nation's extreme vulnerability to global climate change.
The Permanent Mission in Geneva serves as the country’s main platform inside the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Historically, the Maldivian mission has achieved massive global impact by pioneering the international recognition of the explicit link between human rights and climate change, arguing that environmental degradation directly threatens the fundamental right to life, health, and a homeland. Under Ambassador Rasheed's leadership, the mission aggressively lobbies for climate adaptation funding for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), promotes sustainable blue economy frameworks within the WTO, and works closely with global health organizations to strengthen climate-resilient healthcare infrastructure.
