The First Buddhist House in Europe marks Its 100th Anniversary

The International Buddhist Conference Academic was held for the occasion

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Germany and the German Dharmaduta Society hosted The International Buddhist Conference Academic to make the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of Das Buddhistische Haus, the first Buddhist House in Europe.

Ambassadors and representatives from embassies of countries practicing Buddhism, including Cambodia, India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand participated in the conference which took place on the 4th of August at the Zehlendorf Community Hall, Berlin.

The Buddhist Haus (Das Buddhistische Haus) was established in 1924 by Dr. Paul Dahlke, a German physician who purchased land in Berlin-Frohnau to spread Buddhist teachings and purify the mind.

He preached the Buddhist way of life in combination with the dynamics of Western environment which has marked the legacy of the Buddhist House.

The topics of the conference included an overview of the house’s history and the life’s work of Dr. Dahlke along with the profound contribution of the Buddhist religion to global peace and unity and the relevance and application of Buddhist teachings in the modern world.

40 Buddhist monks from various countries and 50 representatives of relevant academia participated in the panels.

The Royal Thai Embassy supported the program with the performance of a traditional Thai dance.
