History
The Central African Republic (CAR) became a member of the United Nations on 20 September 1960, shortly after gaining independence. Since joining the UN, the country has engaged with the organization on issues related to peace and security, humanitarian assistance, human rights, development, and state-building. Given the country’s experience with political instability and armed conflict, UN engagement in the Central African Republic has focused significantly on peacebuilding, protection of civilians, humanitarian support, and the strengthening of national institutions.
The Central African Republic has been closely involved with UN peace and security efforts, particularly through the presence of UN peace operations. The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) was established in 2014 to support peace and security, protect civilians, facilitate humanitarian assistance, and assist with the political transition and stabilization process. The country has also participated in UN human rights mechanisms and international discussions addressing the challenges faced by conflict-affected and least developed countries.
The Permanent Mission of the Central African Republic to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents the country before Geneva-based UN institutions and international organizations. The Mission engages on issues including human rights, humanitarian affairs, development, health, labour, and international cooperation, particularly through bodies such as the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other Geneva-based organizations.
