The Ambassador
H.E. Ms. Michelle Hau’ofa
H.E. Ms. Michelle Hau’ofa is a Papua New Guinean leader and diplomat who serves as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Papua New Guinea to the United Nations Office in Geneve. She presented her credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya, on 4 November 2025, officially assuming her role as the country’s representative to the Geneva-based United Nations system.
Ms. Hau’ofa brings more than 35 years of professional experience from both the public and private sectors. Throughout her career, she has worked in areas including public health, indigenous rights, community development, refugee support and anti-corruption initiatives. She has held leadership positions in several institutions and has contributed to programmes focused on improving social development and strengthening communities in Papua New Guinea.
Ms. Hau’ofa is recognized as the first indigenous Papua New Guinean woman to chair the board of a major financial institution in the country. She is also the founder and President of the Roger Hau’ofa Kidney Foundation, an organization established in memory of her late father and dedicated to raising awareness and supporting initiatives related to kidney health.
History
According to information from the Government of Papua New Guinea, the country established its first Permanent Mission in Geneva in April 2025, marking the creation of a dedicated diplomatic presence in this important multilateral centre. The appointment of H.E. Ms. Michelle Hau’ofa as the country’s Permanent Representative followed the establishment of this mission, and she became the first Ambassador of Papua New Guinea accredited to the United Nations in Geneva.
The Mission provides Papua New Guinea with a permanent platform to participate in international discussions and negotiations conducted in Geneva, including those related to human rights, health, labour, trade, sustainable development and international cooperation. Through its presence in Geneva, Papua New Guinea strengthens its engagement with the multilateral system and promotes its national priorities within international organizations.
