The Ambassador
Min Thein
Min Thein, born on June 20, 1968, in Yangon, is the Ambassador-designate of Myanmar to Austria and the Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations and International Organizations in Vienna, roles he has held since December 6, 2020.
Min Thein's academic journey began at Yangon University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics. He furthered his education internationally, obtaining a Master of International Studies from Chung-Ang University's Graduate School of International Studies in Seoul, and a Master of International Public Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington D.C.
Min Thein embarked on his diplomatic career in 1992 as a staff member in the Consular, Legal, and International Treaties Department of Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His early roles provided foundational experience, leading to his appointment as Head of Branch for the Political Department and the Department of Myanmar Missions Abroad from 1993 to 1998.
His overseas assignments began in Tokyo, where he served as Second Secretary and later as First Secretary at the Myanmar Embassy from 1998 to 2002. He returned to Myanmar to take up the role of Assistant Director in the Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2005. His subsequent postings included roles as First Secretary and Counsellor at the Myanmar Embassy in Vientiane from 2005 to 2008, and Deputy Director of Training, Research and Foreign Language Department, and Political Department at the Ministry from 2008 to 2013.
From 2013 to 2016, Min Thein served as Counsellor, Minister-Counsellor, and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Myanmar Embassy in Washington D.C. Following this, he was Deputy Director-General of the Protocol Department and later of the International Organizations and Economic Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before his current appointment, he was the Director-General (Chief of Protocol) at the Ministry.
Min Thein has represented Myanmar in various high-level international engagements, including the United Nations General Assembly, ASEAN summits, and other international forums focused on security, diplomacy, and economic cooperation. He has received several honours for his service, including the Rule of Law and Order Medal, the Public Service Medal, and the Public Good Service Medal. Additionally, he was awarded the Best Cadet at the Mid-Level Official Management Course of the Central Institute of Civil Service of Myanmar.
Min Thein is married to Mrs. Brigitte Tawk, and they are proud parents of two sons.
