The Ambassador
Amb. Albertina Maria Domingos Macdonald
Albertina Maria Domingos Macdonald is a Mozambican career diplomat. Before serving in London, she represented Mozambique in other African and international postings, including Addis Ababa. She became High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in 2020 and later received additional non-resident accreditation to Ireland, combining bilateral, Commonwealth and diaspora responsibilities.
History
Bilateral relations between Mozambique and the United Kingdom are uniquely strategic, close, and cooperative. Although Mozambique shares no historic colonial ties with Britain, it made history in 1995 by becoming the first nation without constitutional links to the UK to be admitted into the Commonwealth of Nations. The High Commission operates out of a grand, historic Georgian property located at 21 Fitzroy Square in the elegant diplomatic and architectural district of Fitzrovia.
The High Commission in London serves as a principal command center for executing blue-economy statecraft, climate-resilience diplomacy, and foreign direct investment attraction between Maputo and Whitehall. Under High Commissioner Mac Donald’s extensive multilateral direction, a primary focus of the mission involves operationalizing the commitments from the UK-Africa Investment Summit frameworks. The High Commission works hand-in-hand with City of London financial institutions to channel British institutional capital into Mozambique’s massive, world-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure projects, logistics corridors, and renewable energy grids.
Commercially, the mission aggressively utilizes the UK's Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) to secure duty-free and quota-free market entry for premium Mozambican agricultural goods, aluminum, and fisheries.
Furthermore, the High Commission drives deep educational and defense synchronization—partnering closely with the Commonwealth Secretariat on human capital development and coordinating with Whitehall on maritime safety security along the Indian Ocean coast—while running a highly streamlined consular department that provides digitized passport renewals, visa processing, and civil registration services for the thriving Mozambican corporate, academic, and professional diaspora community residing throughout the British Isles.
