The Ambassador
Amb. Erzhan Kazykhan
H.E. Mr. Erzhan Kazykhan is a heavyweight of Central Asian diplomacy and a premier statesman within the Kazkhstani foreign policy architecture. He assumed his role in Geneva bringing an extraordinary depth of executive experience, having previously served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and, more recently, as the Special Representative of the President for International Cooperation (Assistant to the President).
Ambassador Kazykhan’s distinguished career includes serving as Kazakhstan's Ambassador to the United States, the United Kingdom, and Austria. He also possesses extensive multilateral credentials from his prior tenure as the Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and international organizations in Vienna. Holding a Ph.D. in History, he has spent decades shaping Kazakhstan’s multi-vector foreign policy, establishing his country as a reliable, neutral mediator on the global stage and a highly effective economic partner between East and West.
History
Kazakhstan’s diplomatic strategy in International Geneva is profoundly defined by its historical legacy as a nation that voluntarily relinquished the world's fourth-largest nuclear arsenal after gaining independence in 1991, establishing non-proliferation as its core global identity.
The Permanent Mission in Geneva serves as Kazakhstan's vital platform within the Conference on Disarmament (CD), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the World Health Organization (WHO). Historically, the mission’s core mandates focus heavily on leading global initiatives for nuclear disarmament, promoting transit-transport corridors for landlocked developing countries (LLDCs), and shaping international digital trade regulations. Furthermore, following the landmark 1978 Alma-Ata Declaration, the Kazakhstani mission continuously bridges its historical healthcare legacy with Geneva, actively driving global policies on primary healthcare and pandemic preparedness within the WHO framework.
