History
Austria and Iceland established diplomatic relations in 1947. The relationship has traditionally been friendly and characterised by cooperation within European and international organisations, particularly the United Nations, the OSCE, and other multilateral frameworks.
Although bilateral trade and political contacts are relatively limited due to the countries’ size and geographical distance, relations are positive and include cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, climate policy, tourism, fisheries, and sustainable development. Iceland’s embassy in Vienna also plays an important role because Vienna hosts several international organisations relevant to Icelandic foreign policy.
