The Ambassador
H.E. Mr. Tsegab Kebebew Daka
H.E. Tsegab Kebebew Daka is the Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva. He presented his credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya, following his appointment.
Prior to his appointment in Geneva, Ambassador Daka served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Australia from 2022. He has had a long diplomatic career spanning nearly three decades within Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His overseas assignments include serving as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Ethiopia in The Hague, Netherlands (2019–2021), Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Ethiopia in Washington D.C., United States (2011–2015), and Second Secretary at the Embassy of Ethiopia in Beijing, China (2001–2006).
At Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ambassador Daka held several senior positions, including Director General of Asia and Pacific Affairs (2017–2019), Coordinator for United Nations Security Council Affairs (2016–2017), Head of the Foreign Service Training Institute (2015–2016), Chief of Cabinet at the Minister’s Office (2010–2011), and Director of the Asia and Oceania Affairs Department (2007–2010). Among his professional achievements, he led Ethiopia’s successful campaign for election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2017–2018 term.
Ambassador Daka holds an Executive Master’s degree in Development and Governance from CERIS-ULB Diplomatic School of Brussels (2020–2021), a Master of Arts in Political Science (1991–1993), and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (1988–1991) from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
History
Ethiopia joined the United Nations on 13 November 1945, becoming one of the Organization’s founding members. Since its admission, Ethiopia has played an active role in multilateral diplomacy, particularly on issues related to peace and security, decolonization, African affairs, sustainable development, and international cooperation.
The Permanent Mission of Ethiopia to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Ethiopia’s interests within the Geneva-based multilateral system. The Mission engages with a wide range of UN agencies and international organizations headquartered in Geneva, including the Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and other humanitarian and development institutions.
Ethiopia has historically maintained an active role in UN peace and security matters. The country has contributed significantly to UN peacekeeping operations, particularly in Africa, and has been one of the largest troop-contributing countries to United Nations peacekeeping missions. Ethiopia has also served multiple terms on the UN Security Council, including the 2017–2018 term, and has played a prominent role in African Union–United Nations cooperation.
Within Geneva-based institutions, Ethiopia participates in discussions on human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, labour, trade, migration, and sustainable development. The Permanent Mission works to advance Ethiopia’s priorities in these areas while contributing to broader multilateral efforts addressing challenges affecting Africa and the international community.
