The Ambassador
H.E. Mr. Juan Ndong Nguema Mbengono
H.E. Juan Ndong Nguema Mbengono is the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, while also serving as Ambassador of Equatorial Guinea to Switzerland. Prior to his appointment in Geneva, he served as Ambassador of Equatorial Guinea to Brazil from 2018.
Throughout his career, Ambassador Nguema Mbengono has held several senior governmental and diplomatic positions. He served as Minister of Health and Social Welfare of Equatorial Guinea from 2015, Vice Minister for National Security from 2013, and Advisor to the President on national security from 2016. Earlier in his diplomatic career, he served as Ambassador to Morocco (2002–2011), concurrently accredited as non-resident Ambassador to Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, and later as Ambassador to Gabon. He also held diplomatic assignments in Cuba and Cameroon and represented Equatorial Guinea in numerous regional and international conferences.
Ambassador Nguema Mbengono received professional training at the Yaoundé Cameroon Police School for commissioners (1985–1989) and at the Saint-Cyr-Au-Mont D’Or Police School in France (1992). He was born on 27 May 1961 and is married with five children.
History
Equatorial Guinea joined the United Nations on 12 November 1968, shortly after gaining independence. Since becoming a UN member, the country has participated in the work of the Organization, including through engagement with UN bodies and specialized agencies addressing development, peace and security, human rights, health, and international cooperation.
The Permanent Mission of Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents the country’s interests within the Geneva-based multilateral system. Its work focuses on issues addressed by the organizations headquartered in Geneva, including human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, labour, trade, and development cooperation.
Equatorial Guinea has participated in Geneva-based UN processes, including the work of the Human Rights Council and other international organizations. The country has also engaged with UN agencies on development priorities and international cooperation frameworks. Due to Geneva’s role as a centre for multilateral diplomacy, the Permanent Mission serves as a platform for Equatorial Guinea’s participation in negotiations and discussions on global issues handled by the UN system and related organizations.
