History
The Republic of Côte d’Ivoire became a member of the United Nations on 20 September 1960, shortly after gaining independence. Since joining the organization, Côte d’Ivoire has actively participated in multilateral diplomacy, with priorities including peace and security, sustainable development, humanitarian affairs, human rights, and regional cooperation in West Africa.
Côte d’Ivoire has played an important role in UN discussions on African peace and security, particularly due to its experience with political crises and post-conflict recovery. The country has engaged with UN peacebuilding and development initiatives and has contributed to international efforts supporting stability in West Africa. Côte d’Ivoire has also emphasized economic development, regional integration, and cooperation through African and international institutions. In Geneva-based forums, the country has participated actively in discussions on human rights, trade, health, labour, and development, reflecting the priorities of many developing and African states within the multilateral system.
The Permanent Mission of Côte d’Ivoire to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents the country before Geneva-based multilateral institutions, including the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and other specialized agencies. The Mission engages on issues including human rights, humanitarian affairs, disarmament, development cooperation, trade, and international governance.
