The Ambassador
Amb. Mr. Roberto Céspedes Gómez
H.E. Mr. Roberto Antonio Céspedes Gómez serves as Minister-Counsellor and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva.
Mr. Céspedes Gómez is a career Costa Rican diplomat who joined the Costa Rican diplomatic service on 16 March 2006. Throughout his career, he has held positions related to bilateral relations, multilateral affairs, human rights, environmental diplomacy, and international cooperation.
From 2007 to 2010, he served as Counsellor and Consul at the Embassy of Costa Rica in the People’s Republic of China. Between 2010 and 2012, he worked as Counsellor at the Embassy of Costa Rica in Belgium and the Mission to the European Union. He later served in Costa Rica’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in areas related to European affairs, CELAC coordination, human rights, environmental issues, and climate change negotiations. From 2014 to 2019, he was Minister-Counsellor and Consul General at the Embassy of Costa Rica in Colombia. Since August 2021, he has served at Costa Rica’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva.
Mr. Céspedes Gómez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Costa Rica, a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the National University of Costa Rica, and is a graduate of the Master’s programme in Diplomacy at the Manuel María de Peralta Institute of Foreign Service. He speaks English and French, and has basic knowledge of Chinese, German, and Portuguese.
History
Costa Rica is a founding member of the United Nations, having signed the UN Charter on 26 June 1945 and becoming an original member of the organization. Since joining the UN, Costa Rica has built a strong profile in multilateral diplomacy, particularly in the areas of international peace, human rights, disarmament, democracy, sustainable development, and international law.
A distinctive feature of Costa Rica’s participation in the UN is its long-standing commitment to peace and human security. The country is internationally recognized for the abolition of its military in 1948, a policy that has shaped its diplomatic priorities and its advocacy for disarmament, peaceful conflict resolution, and the strengthening of international institutions. Costa Rica has also played an active role in promoting human rights, environmental protection, climate action, and the rights of vulnerable groups. It has served multiple times on UN bodies, including the UN Human Rights Council, and has contributed to international discussions on issues such as the prohibition of nuclear weapons, gender equality, and sustainable development.
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Costa Rica to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Costa Rica before Geneva-based multilateral institutions, including the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and other specialized agencies. The Mission works on issues including human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, labour, trade, development, environmental protection, and international cooperation. The Mission is located at Avenue de France 23, Geneva, and is accredited to the UN Office and other international organizations based in the city.
