History

The Union of the Comoros became a member of the United Nations on 12 November 1975, shortly after gaining independence. Since joining the UN, Comoros has engaged with the organization on issues closely linked to its national priorities, including sustainable development, climate change, small island developing states (SIDS) concerns, humanitarian affairs, and international cooperation.

As a small island developing state, Comoros has emphasized within the UN system the particular vulnerabilities faced by island countries, especially those related to climate change, rising sea levels, environmental protection, and economic resilience. The country participates actively in international frameworks supporting SIDS, including the UN Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) process. Comoros has also engaged with UN development agencies on poverty reduction, capacity-building, health, and governance-related initiatives.

The Permanent Mission of the Union of the Comoros to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Comoros before Geneva-based multilateral institutions, including organizations working on human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, labour, trade, and development. The Mission contributes to Comoros’ participation in bodies such as the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and other Geneva-based organizations.
