The Ambassador
H.E. Mr. Jia Guide
H.E. Mr. Jia Guide is the Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva. He presented his credentials to H.E. Ms. Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, upon assuming his position.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Ambassador Jia served as Ambassador of China to Italy and San Marino from 2022. Previously, he was Ambassador of China to Peru from 2015 to 2019. He also has previous experience within the United Nations system, having served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Vienna from 2005 to 2009.
Ambassador Jia joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in 1990 and has held several positions within the Ministry’s Department of Treaty and Law, including serving as Director-General of the Department from 2019 to 2022. His diplomatic career has focused extensively on international law, multilateral affairs, and China’s participation in international organizations.
Upon taking up his post in Geneva, he emphasized China’s commitment to supporting the United Nations and stated that China would continue to uphold multilateralism, support the UN-centred international system, and engage actively in efforts to strengthen the effectiveness and authority of the organization.
History
China is a founding member of the United Nations, having signed the UN Charter on 26 June 1945 and becoming one of the original members of the organization on 24 October 1945. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China plays a central role in the UN system, particularly in matters related to international peace and security, development, global governance, and international law. Since the restoration of the People’s Republic of China’s seat at the United Nations in 1971 through UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, China has expanded its engagement across the UN system and become one of the organization’s largest contributors to peacekeeping operations among the Security Council’s permanent members.
China has maintained an active presence in Geneva due to the city’s importance as a centre of multilateral diplomacy. The Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents China before Geneva-based UN bodies and international organizations, including the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and other specialized agencies. The Mission plays a significant role in China’s engagement on issues including global health, trade, development, human rights, disarmament, humanitarian affairs, and international cooperation.
China has used its Geneva Mission as a platform to advance its positions on multilateral reform, development cooperation, and global governance. In recent years, China has promoted initiatives including the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Governance Initiative, presenting them as contributions to international cooperation and a more balanced global governance system.
