The Ambassador
H.E. Mr. Ahmad Makaila
H.E. Mr. Ahmad Makaila is the Permanent Representative of Chad to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva. Prior to his appointment, he served since 2023 as Ambassador of Chad to France, while concurrently serving as non-resident Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, and the Vatican, as well as Permanent Delegate of Chad to UNESCO and Permanent Representative to the International Organization of La Francophonie.
This marks Mr. Makaila’s second appointment as Permanent Representative of Chad to the United Nations Office at Geneva. He previously held this position from 2018 to 2023, while also serving as Ambassador of Chad to Switzerland. Before his first posting to Geneva, he worked in 2017 as Spokesperson for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).
Mr. Makaila has also built an extensive career in journalism and strategic communication. He served as Director General of the National Office of Radio and Television of Chad, Director of the Chadian Press Agency, and as an editorial columnist for Radio France Internationale (RFI). From 2002 to 2004, he was Communication and Human Rights Advisor to the President of Chad.
Mr. Makaila holds a Master’s degree in Administration and Management from the University of Lille, France, a degree in Journalism from the Institut de Formation aux Techniques de l’Information in Niger, and a certification from the Institut Commercial de Nancy, France. He has been awarded the distinction of Knight of the Order of Civic Merit of Chad and named Honorary Citizen of the City of Louisiana, United States.
History
Chad became a member of the United Nations on 20 September 1960, shortly after gaining independence. Since joining the UN, Chad has participated in multilateral diplomacy focused on peace and security, humanitarian affairs, sustainable development, human rights, and regional stability in the Sahel. As a country affected by regional insecurity and humanitarian challenges, Chad has worked closely with the United Nations on issues including conflict prevention, refugee protection, food security, and support for vulnerable populations.
Chad has played an active role in UN peace and security efforts, including through contributions to international peacekeeping operations and participation in discussions on regional security challenges. The country has also engaged with UN humanitarian and development agencies, particularly in relation to displacement, climate-related vulnerabilities, and the needs of least developed countries. Chad has served as a member of several UN bodies, including the UN Human Rights Council (2021–2023), reflecting its participation in international human rights diplomacy.
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Chad to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Chad before Geneva-based UN institutions and international organizations. The Mission engages on issues including human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, labour, trade, development, and international cooperation, working with bodies such as the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and other Geneva-based institutions.
