The Ambassador
Maimounata Ouattara
H.E. Maimounata Ouattara is a Burkinabe career diplomat serving as Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the international organisations based in Vienna. She was appointed to the post in October 2021. She holds an advanced degree in History from the University of Ouagadougou, postgraduate training in International Relations from the International Relations Institute of Cameroon, and specialised postgraduate training in multilateral diplomacy from the Graduate Institute in Geneva.
She joined Burkina Faso's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2000. Her career has included diplomatic service at the Embassy in Washington, work as an adviser and Director for Parliamentary Diplomacy at Burkina Faso's National Assembly, and service from 2014 to 2021 as a Principal Policy Officer in the Cabinet of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, where she worked on strategic partnerships and resource mobilisation.
History
Austria and Burkina Faso have maintained diplomatic and development contacts for several decades. Burkina Faso opened a resident embassy and permanent mission in Vienna in the late 1990s, reflecting the importance of Austria as both a bilateral partner and a host of international organisations. Cooperation has included development policy, education, economic relations, security, culture and multilateral diplomacy, with the Vienna mission representing Burkina Faso in United Nations organisations and other international bodies.
