The Ambassador
H.E. Mr. Angel Bandjov
H.E. Mr. Angel Bandjov is the Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva. Prior to his appointment, he served since 2021 as Director of Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, where he worked on issues related to international human rights policy and multilateral cooperation.
Mr. Bandjov joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria in 2003 and has held several positions related to security policy and international affairs. He served as Head of the Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Department within the Security Policy Directorate (2015–2017) and previously worked as a Desk Officer in the NATO Department (2003–2006 and 2009–2011). From 2017 to 2021, he served at the Permanent Delegation of Bulgaria to NATO in Brussels, first as Counsellor and later, from 2018, as Head of the Political Section. He also served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Bulgaria in Skopje, North Macedonia (2014–2015). Earlier in his career, from 2001 to 2003, he worked as a Desk Officer at the Ministry of Justice of Bulgaria.
Mr. Bandjov holds two Master’s degrees: one in International Relations from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and another in European Political Studies from the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. In addition to his native Bulgarian, he speaks English and French and has knowledge of Spanish, Russian, and South Slavic languages.
History
Bulgaria became a member of the United Nations on 14 December 1955. Since joining the organization, Bulgaria has participated actively in multilateral diplomacy, contributing to international discussions on peace and security, human rights, sustainable development, humanitarian affairs, disarmament, and international law. Following the country’s democratic transition and its integration into Euro-Atlantic structures, Bulgaria has continued to engage actively within the UN system, including through participation in UN bodies and international initiatives.
The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Bulgaria before the United Nations Office at Geneva and other Geneva-based international organizations. The Mission works on a wide range of multilateral issues, including human rights, humanitarian affairs, disarmament, arms control, health, labour, trade, and sustainable development. Through its engagement in Geneva, the Mission contributes to negotiations and international cooperation within organizations such as the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and other Geneva-based institutions.
