History
Benin and the United Kingdom have maintained bilateral relations since the period following Benin's independence in 1960. Their contemporary relationship is conducted largely through non-resident diplomatic arrangements: Benin's representation for the United Kingdom is handled from its embassy in Paris, while British diplomatic and consular responsibilities for Benin are covered principally from the British Embassy in Abidjan. Cooperation has focused on trade, development, regional stability in West Africa and security issues affecting the Gulf of Guinea. The relationship also includes support for business links and international cooperation through organisations in which both countries participate.
