H.E. Mr. Harold Young
H.E. Mr. Harold Young has served as the Permanent Representative of Belize to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva since February 2026, when he presented his credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Young served as an Advisor to the Department of History at the University of Belize from August 2024. He previously worked as Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Management at Austin Peay State University, United States (2016–2024), and as an Adjunct Professor of Political Science at Georgia State University (2011–2016) and Oglethorpe University (2015).
Mr. Young has also maintained a legal career and has held a license to practice law in Belize since 1992. He holds a PhD in Public Law from Georgia State University, United States (2016), a Master’s degree in Managerial Leadership from National Louis University, United States (1999), a Juris Doctor degree in Law from the University of the West Indies/Norman Manley Law School, Jamaica (1992), and a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Philosophy from the University of Dallas, United States (1987).
History
Belize became a member of the United Nations on 25 September 1981, shortly after gaining independence on 21 September 1981. Since joining the UN, Belize has actively participated in multilateral diplomacy, particularly on issues affecting small island developing states (SIDS), including climate change, sustainable development, ocean governance, biodiversity protection, disaster resilience, and the needs of vulnerable economies. Belize has consistently used UN platforms to advocate for stronger international cooperation on environmental protection and the sustainable management of marine resources.
The Permanent Mission of Belize to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Belize in Geneva-based UN bodies and international organizations. The Mission engages on issues including human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, labour, trade, development, and environmental matters. Through its participation in Geneva-based institutions, Belize advances its national priorities within the multilateral system, particularly in areas relevant to developing countries and small island states.
