H.E. The Hon. Edmund Hinkson
H.E. The Hon. Edmund Hinkson, S.C. is an eminent Barbadian statesman, veteran parliamentarian, and distinguished legal scholar. Appointed to the Court of St James's in early 2026, he brings a formidable track record of executive governance, judicial advocacy, and legislative leadership to International London.
A highly respected attorney-at-law since 1986, High Commissioner Hinkson was educated at Harrison College before earning his Bachelor of Laws degree (with Honours), a Certificate in Legal Education, and a Master's degree in Business Law from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. His exceptional legal career was recognized with his appointment as Senior Counsel (S.C.). Transitioning into national politics, he represented St James North as a Member of Parliament for over a decade. Most notably, he served in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley as the Minister of Home Affairs (2018–2020), overseeing vast portfolios related to domestic security, immigration, and civil administration. Nationally recognized as a leading advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities, his deployment to London ensures Barbados is represented by a political heavyweight deeply connected to the nation's core social and economic strategies
History
Following its transition to a Parliamentary Republic in 2021, Barbados has redefined its historic relationship with the United Kingdom, maintaining deep bilateral ties and active Commonwealth leadership while proudly asserting its sovereign identity.
The High Commission in Bloomsbury serves as the central command for advancing Barbados' trade, tourism, and climate-diplomacy objectives with Whitehall. Historically, the mission's core mandate has focused extensively on securing investment into the nation's world-class tourism and maritime sectors. Under High Commissioner Hinkson's contemporary leadership, a primary pillar of the mission is driving the "Bridgetown Initiative"—Barbados' highly influential global campaign championed by Prime Minister Mottley to aggressively reform international financial systems and secure fair climate-resilience funding for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
