Amb. Mohammad Nazrul Islam
Dr. M. Nazrul Islam is a highly accomplished career diplomat within the Bangladesh Foreign Service. He stepped into the leadership of the London mission as Acting High Commissioner in March 2026, bringing over two decades of sophisticated multilateral, regional security, and public administration experience.
Dr. Islam joined the foreign service in 2003, building a robust academic foundation that includes a Master of Science from the University of Dhaka, a Master of Arts in International Relations from the Freie Universität Berlin, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration from l'École Nationale d'Administration (ENA) in Strasbourg, France. He also holds a PhD in International Relations. His expansive diplomatic track record features critical assignments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Dhaka, alongside strategic postings abroad at Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions in Berlin, Amman, Beijing, and Singapore. Prior to taking the helm at Queen's Gate, he served as the Deputy High Commissioner in London. An impressive linguist, he is fluent in Bangla, English, and French, with additional proficiency in Mandarin and German.
History
The relationship between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom carries immense historical weight. Following the 1971 Liberation War, the historic visit of the nation's founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, to London in January 1972 solidified the UK as Bangladesh's primary Western gateway. Bangladesh officially joined the Commonwealth in April 1972.
The High Commission in South Kensington operates as the vital nexus for managing the complex political, economic, and consular ties between Dhaka and Whitehall. Historically, the mission's core mandate has focused extensively on fostering international development assistance, driving trade initiatives within the Readymade Garment (RMG) sector, and looking after one of the UK’s most politically active and successful diaspora communities (the British-Bangladeshi community). Under Dr. Islam’s stewardship, the mission heavily emphasizes commercial statecraft—lobbying for post-Brexit trade arrangements, driving British investments into Bangladesh's expanding digital and green infrastructure sectors, and actively managing maritime diplomacy through the London-based International Maritime Organization (IMO).
