History
Bangladesh became a member of the United Nations on 17 September 1974, following its independence in 1971. Since joining the UN, Bangladesh has been an active participant in multilateral diplomacy, with a strong focus on peacekeeping, sustainable development, climate change, migration, humanitarian affairs, and the rights of developing countries. Bangladesh is one of the largest contributors to United Nations peacekeeping operations, and has consistently advocated for international cooperation on issues affecting least developed countries and climate-vulnerable nations.
The Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Bangladesh in Geneva-based UN institutions and specialized agencies. The Mission engages on a broad range of issues, including human rights, humanitarian affairs, health, labour, trade, migration, development, and disarmament. Through its work in Geneva, the Mission advances Bangladesh’s positions in multilateral negotiations and cooperates with organizations such as the Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and other Geneva-based institutions.
