Dr. Varuzhan Nersesyan is an Armenian diplomat who assumed his current role as Ambassador of Armenia to the United Kingdom in July 2021. He previously served as Ambassador to the United States from November 2018 to July 2021. During his tenure in London, he oversaw the relocation of the Armenian Embassy to a new five-storey building on St. James’s Square, marking a significant milestone since its establishment in 1992.

His career spans more than two decades of diplomatic service. Before his ambassadorial appointments, Nersesyan held senior positions in Armenia’s government, including Assistant to the Prime Minister in 2018 and Assistant to the President from 2012 to 2018, where he was responsible for international affairs and matters related to the National Security Council. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Armenia in Washington, DC, and earlier in his career worked extensively within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focusing on arms control, OSCE affairs, and European integration.

Nersesyan studied International Relations, Diplomacy, and International Law at Yerevan State University, completing his Master of Arts in 1996. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Public Administration Academy of Armenia in 1998, and later pursued the Global Master of Arts Program at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston between 2007 and 2009. His professional training includes specialized programs at the Vienna Diplomatic Academy, the British Know How Foundation in Brussels, the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program, and courses on arms control and European integration.

Born and educated in Armenia, Nersesyan has dedicated his career to strengthening Armenia’s diplomatic presence abroad and advancing its political, cultural, and economic relations with both the United States and the United Kingdom.
