The Embassy of Argentina in Vienna boosts its Cultural Agenda with Theatre, Cinema and Art
Three cultural events will take place in different venues in the city between March and July, with micro-theatre, film and contemporary art proposals
March 31st, 2025The agenda includes the exhibition ‘AIL Ping-Pong #1: Liquidity’, an artistic reflection on liquidity and the environment; the micro-theatre cycle ‘Haber empezar por ahí’, with short plays that tackle complex situations with humour; and the film ‘Los domingos mueren más personas’, an intimate and award-winning road movie that explores identity and family relationships. A unique opportunity to approach Argentine art, theatre and cinema in the Austrian capital.
On 9 April at 19:00 at METRO Kinokulturhaus, “Los domingos mueren más personas” (More People Die on Sundays) will be screened. This family drama about identity and intergenerational relationships is directed by Iair Said. The director himself plays the lead role of an insecure thirty-something in this emotional road movie between Italy and Argentina. It is a family film with calm tones, in which looks and gestures often say more than dialogue. The film won the first prize in the international competition of the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival 2024: ‘The jury was deeply impressed by this Argentinian debut feature set in the contemporary Jewish environment of Buenos Aires. It is a beautifully directed and intimate family drama that deals with sexual identity, questions of life and death, loneliness and intergenerational family relationships. The screening will feature an introduction by Klaus Davidowicz and Frank Stern, followed by a discussion with the audience. Tickets can be booked at the following link: https://juedischer-filmclub.at/reservierung/.
From 2 to 4 April, theatre will take centre stage with ‘Haber empezar por ahí’ (To have started there), a micro-theatre cycle presented by the Argentinian group Soles del Sur at the Cervantes Institute in Vienna. The performances will start at 19:00 and admission is free until full capacity is reached. To be able to attend you have to write to the following email prensaviena@cervantes.es. The group Soles del Sur stars in four micro-plays by Argentinian authors Claudio Rogis (‘32 minutes 15 seconds’ and ‘Am I dead?’) and Claudia Piñeiro (‘How much is a fridge worth?’), and Spanish author Carlos Zamarriego (‘From the Roof’). In approximately 15 minutes, each of them develops complicated life situations with a touch of humour. The Argentinian actress Sonia Maffei, a member of the group Soles del Sur since 2019, is one of the protagonists of the micro-play ‘De la Azotea’: the place chosen and the motives of each of them to do what they are going to do are the cause of an amusing discussion between two suicidal people who are about to take the leap into the void.
The programme continues with the exhibition ‘AIL Ping-Pong #1: Liquidity’, which will be on view at Otto Wagner-Postsparkasse from 20 March to 30 July, Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 18:00. Based on the history of the ‘Postsparkasse’ as a former bank, AIL invited five artists to engage with a concept known for its economic context. Although primarily a financial term, ‘liquidity’ can be interpreted in various ways and in many contexts. Argentinean artist Karina Fernández was one of the five selected. Her work ‘Biodegradability is the new liquidity’ questions the value of cash and assets in a world where air, water and food pollution threaten life. Made from biodegradable plastic and soil, her installation explores plastic waste and draws a parallel between financial liquidity and biodegradability: the ability of materials to break down into basic elements that the environment can safely reabsorb without causing harm or pollution.
