H.E. Mr. Idris LATRECHE
H.E. Mr. Idris Latreche is the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations Office at Geneva. Before assuming this position, he served as Chief of Cabinet to Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs (2024–2026) and as Senior Advisor to the Minister of State (2020–2024). Between October 2014 and 2020, he served at the Permanent Mission of the African Union to the United Nations in New York, where he advised the African Union Ambassador on peace and security matters, addressed issues of particular interest to Africa before the UN Security Council, and acted as the focal point for the A3 (the three African non-permanent members of the Security Council). Earlier, from 2010 to 2014, he served as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations in New York, where he was responsible for the Fourth and Sixth Committees and Security Council affairs. Prior to that, he worked at Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on human rights and humanitarian affairs.
Mr. Latreche has participated in numerous sessions of the UN General Assembly and other regional and multilateral meetings. He holds a diploma from Algeria’s National School of Administration, Diplomatic Section (2004–2008). He presented his credentials as Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations Office at Geneva on 8 June 2026.
History
Algeria became a member of the United Nations on 8 October 1962, shortly after gaining independence. Since joining the UN, Algeria has actively participated in multilateral diplomacy, particularly on issues related to decolonization, African affairs, international peace and security, development, and the rights of peoples to self-determination. Algeria has also contributed to UN peace and security efforts and has served as an elected member of the UN Security Council, including for the 2024–2025 term.
The Permanent Mission of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Algeria in Geneva-based UN institutions and specialized organizations, including the Human Rights Council and other multilateral forums. The Mission is listed by the United Nations Office at Geneva as being located in Bellevue, Geneva, and is headed by H.E. Mr. Idris Latreche, who presented his credentials as Permanent Representative on 8 June 2026. Public UN records show that previous Permanent Representatives to Geneva include diplomats such as Rachid Bladehane (appointed in 2024), Faouzia Boumaiza-Mebarki (appointed in 2023), and Lazhar Soualem (appointed in 2020), reflecting Algeria’s continued engagement with Geneva-based multilateral diplomacy.
