The Ambassador
H.E. Mr. Nasir Ahmad Andisha
Dr. Nasir A. Andisha is the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the UN in Geneva. Before his appointment, he served as Afghanistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Management and Resources for over three years. He previously served as Ambassador to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji (2011–2015), becoming the youngest ambassador in Afghanistan’s foreign service at age 32. Earlier roles included Director General of the Fifth Political Division (covering the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) and Director of Multilateral Economic Relations and International Financial Institutions.
Dr. Andisha has also worked with the Energy Charter Secretariat in Brussels, the UN Mission in New York, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. He holds a PhD from the Asia Pacific College of Diplomacy at the Australian National University, a master’s degree in International Affairs from Texas A&M University’s Bush School, and advanced security studies diplomas from European and US institutions.
History
Afghanistan has been a member of the United Nations since 19 November 1946, becoming one of the organization’s earliest members. The country has participated in the UN system since its admission, engaging in multilateral diplomacy on issues including international peace and security, humanitarian affairs, development, and human rights. Afghanistan’s long-standing relationship with the UN has also included cooperation with UN agencies and programmes operating in the country, particularly through humanitarian and development initiatives.
The Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva represents Afghanistan in Geneva-based multilateral institutions, including the Human Rights Council and other UN bodies. Public records from the United Nations Office at Geneva document successive Afghan Permanent Representatives, including the appointment of Zalmai Aziz in 2010, Nanguyalai Tarzi in 2012, and Nasir Ahmad Andisha in 2019. Ambassador Andisha presented his credentials as Permanent Representative to UN Geneva on 1 April 2019, having previously served as Afghanistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Ambassador to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
Following Afghanistan’s political transition in 2021, the country’s diplomatic representation at the United Nations has continued to operate under the representatives appointed by the previous Afghan government. Publicly available UN records list H.E. Mr. Nasir Ahmad Andisha as Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva. The mission continues to participate in Geneva-based multilateral discussions concerning Afghanistan, including issues related to humanitarian assistance, human rights, and international cooperation.
