The American Embassy is inviting the public to explore New Orleans culture and music here in Berlin

March 18th, 2015

From March 27th to April 26th, Berliners will be offered the chance to explore the cultural diversity – both past and present, of New Orleans. Throughout the month, the US Embassy will be organizing a series of exhibitions, live events and much more for the project “New Orleans – The Sound of the City”. The exhibition grounds will be at Station Berlin and will be open to the public daily.

New Orleans has been one of the most influential cities for the development of American music culture. With its innovations in jazz, rhythm & blues amongst others, it has had an enormous impact on generations all over the world. A few years back, New Orleans faced a natural disaster – Hurricane Katrina, severely damaging the state. The perceptions that the public has after the Hurricane is what the embassy is hoping to change with this project. The city is still a central hub for culture and music innovations, which are accompanied by the states unique spirit for life.

The project will try to present not only historical cultural trends in New Orleans, but also the innovations and tradition of changes that are alive in the city today. It will feature in more than 5,000 square feet at Station Berlin with an array of original pieces, sceneries, costumes, musical instruments, interviews, films and sound clips. In addition, award-winning photographer Michael Smith will be telling the story of New Orleans’ unique culture and history.

The event will open on March 27th with live music from renowned Glen David Andrews, playing jazz and R&B to set the mood for a fun-packed month ahead.

Station Berlin is a historical landmark in the heart of Berlin, which has been transformed into a modern space for exhibitions and conventions. Over the years, it has served as an authentic platform for novel thinking, innovative ideas and creative concepts. These aspects all make Station Berlin the ideal place to carry out this event by the American Embassy.
