May 19th, 2014
News from Berlin - The twelfth Irish Summer Folk Festival in Berlin is scheduled for this Saturday May 24th at the Freilichtbühne Spandau. The festival will showcase Irish music and dance. This year the focus will lie on women in the Irish music and participants include, for instance, Avi McGourty and the Hayes Sisters. Dance again will be presented by Deborah Whelan and Declan McHale, who were both solo dancers for the Lord of the Dance and Riverdance. McHale, in addition, is a World Champion, All Irelands Champion and Great Britain Champion in Irish dance. Robbie Doyle & Bernd Lüdtke, renowned for their Irish Folk music played on the highest level, will also take part in the festival. The doors will open to the public at 19:30.
The Irish folk music and dance is a widely known Irish tradition and Irish dancing is popular worldwide. Inspired by the American folk music movement, a revival of interest in the Irish tradition appeared during the 1960s. This was empowered by groups like the Dubliners and the Clancy Brothers. The annual Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is the largest festival of Irish music in Ireland.
