Telling Kenya’s Stories on the Viennese Screen
Kenyan cinema brings cultural storytelling and women’s voices to Vienna
September 28th, 2026Cinema can offer more than entertainment: it can also provide a way for cultures to meet. In Vienna, a Kenyan film recently brought African storytelling to an international audience, using cinema to present Kenyan perspectives and highlight the role of cultural diplomacy.
On 29 August, the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Austria presented the Austrian premiere of Cocoa Dreams at Vienna’s Burg Kino. The film was written and directed by Kenyan filmmaker Jinna Mutune-Odede and tells the story of a woman returning to Kenya after the death of her grandmother. Through her journey, the film explores family, land, identity and the relationship between personal ambitions and inherited traditions.
The screening offered an opportunity for a Viennese audience to encounter a contemporary Kenyan story through the work of a Kenyan filmmaker. Rather than presenting Kenyan culture solely through traditional forms, the event used cinema to communicate contemporary experiences and perspectives, showing how creative industries can contribute to cultural exchange between countries.
The role of women was also central to the event. With Cocoa Dreams written and directed by a Kenyan woman, the screening placed female creativity and African storytelling at the centre of the cultural exchange. The Embassy presented the initiative in terms of Kenyan cultural diplomacy, highlighting the importance of bringing Kenyan stories and voices to audiences beyond the country's borders.
From Nairobi to Vienna, Cocoa Dreams illustrates how cinema can create connections across borders. By bringing a Kenyan film to an international audience and giving space to a female African filmmaker, the event shows how cultural diplomacy can take shape through storytelling, creativity and shared cultural experiences.
