The upcoming weekend will probably be one of the last ones this summer with warm weather. So why not spend it by one of the many lakes in and around berlin, away from all the city fuss? The outskirts of Berlin offer a wide range of different places to go to, so here we provide you with a short guide with some suggestions.

Most of Berlin’s lakes are easily accessible by both U-Bahn and S-Bahn and free of charge as well. At the few places where an entrence fee is required, this fee never exceeds four euros, and ise meant for maintenance around the lake and for the use of services such as deck-chairs and beach bars. And if you want to take advantage of the sun to the fullest, there are FKK (FreikörperKultur) beaches available,  where you can lose all your clothes and enjoy the lakeside.

Wannsee

Wannsee is located on the southwestern Berlin borough, between Berlin and Potsdam, and it is certainly the most popular Berlin bathing and recreation spot. It is also the oldest one. It was opened in 1907, as a so-called family pool. There are actually two lakes at the location: Grosser Wannsee and Kleiner Wannsee, with wide and sandy beaches. Around ten percent of the area is designated as FKK zone. There are several leisure activities available, such as boat rentals, beach volleyball and soccer pitches. It is a 10 minute walk from the station Nikolassee that can be reached by lines 1 and 7 of the S-Bahn.

Grünewald

A great forest located in the south-west of Berlin, it is the perfect place for walking, jogging and biking. It has many lakes for those who search for some peace and rest. Little lakes can be found there, such as Schlachtensee, south of Wannsee, easily accessible by the S-bahn.  It is the cleanest lake around Berlin, a joy for fish and fisherman. Another one is Krumme Lanke, also known for its calmness and clean water. They are also less crowded than Wannsee for example.

Müggelsee

What Wansee is to West Berlin, Müggelsee is to East Berlin. The largest lake in Berlin, it is 4km long, 2,5 km wide and has three bathing areas: the lake resort Friedrichshagen, the lido Müggelsee, and a neighbouring FKK beach as well. If you fancy watersports, this is the best place for water sports rental: from canoes and sailing boats to motor boats, you can get it here. The nearest station is Berlin-Rahnsdorf, which connects to line 3 of the S-Bahn.

Tegelersee and Flughafensee

The north of Berlin also has a variety of lakes to offer too. Tagelersee is the second largest lake of Berlin, and it is very pitoresque with its seven islands. There are a lot of discoveries to be made there as well. In the northern part of the lake you can find the oldest oak in Berlin, „fat Marie”, which is estimated to be around 900 years old.  It can be reached by U-Bahn line 6 : just remember to get out at Alt Tegel. Absence of boats makes Flughafensee very calm and the perfect spot to go for just a rest. The closest station is Otisstrasse , part of U-Bahn line 6.
