From September 26-28, 2024, Italian President Sergio Mattarella undertook a significant state visit to Germany, aimed at reinforcing bilateral relations. The visit began in Berlin with a tour of the cultural exhibition “Andiamo in Italia! Con Liebermann a Venezia, Firenze e Roma” at Villa Liebermann, accompanied by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

On September 27, President Mattarella received military honours at Bellevue Palace, followed by formal discussions between the two leaders. Both Presidents addressed key topics during a joint press conference, signalling enhanced collaboration in areas such as economics and security. Later, Mattarella paid tribute at the Neue Wache Monument, honouring victims of war and tyranny.

The visit also included meetings with Bundestag President Bärbel Bas and Chancellor Olaf Scholz, discussing European challenges and opportunities for stronger cooperation. The day concluded with a state dinner at Bellevue Palace, where both countries celebrated their historic ties and future prospects for collaboration.
