Ambassador Lim presented South Korea's foreign policy approaches to public diplomacy

South Korean Ambassador Sang Beom Lim delivered a lecture on May 20 titled "Korea Policy Talk - Current Status and Future of Korea's Public Diplomacy Policy" to students and professors of Asian studies at the Free University of Berlin.

In the context of growing interest in South Korea among younger generations, driven by the Korean Wave phenomenon, also known as Hallyu, encompassing K-pop, K-dramas and Manhwas, Ambassador Lim outlined South Korea’s public diplomacy strategies and the activities of the Korean Embassy in Germany, aimed at expanding Korean’s cultural awareness.and soft power.

The lecture presented four key pillars of Korea’s public diplomacy: policy communication, knowledge-oriented, cultural and digital public diplomacy. Policy communication involves direct engagement with foreign audiences and opinion leaders to build trust and communicate South Korea’s global positions, while knowledge-oriented diplomacy promotes academic exchange, expertise-sharing, and collaborative research to deepen understanding of Korean society. Ambassador Lim’s lecture reflected these two pillars by fostering academic dialogue and enhancing understanding of Korea’s foreign policies. Cultural public diplomacy seeks to strengthens connections with foreign audiences through events such as the Korea Week celebration, showcasing Korea’s cultural heritage in areas such as Taekwondo for sports to traditional cuisine.

Digital public diplomacy, meanwhile, leverages digital platforms to reach wider, younger, and more diverse audiences beyond borders, as seen in initiatives like the "KOREAZ Metaverse Global Festival".

A Q&A session followed the lecture, providing students an opportunity to share their thoughts on Korea's Public Diplomacy Policy. Some of the questions covered by the Korean Ambassador included: “What is your opinion on the right direction for Korean Public Diplomacy?” or “How to extend the scope of Korean Public Diplomacy? And to which area?”

This initiative by the Korean Embassy in Berlin demonstrates its ongoing efforts to inform and promote Korea's various strategies in Germany. It emphasizes a strong commitment to fostering bilateral relations between the two countries and engaging younger generations on the importance of cultural diplomacy as a tool of soft power.
