On June 9th and 10th, African culture and cuisine was available for all to enjoy at the African Food Festival at Osthafen in Berlin. The festival offered delicious food from over 12 countries in Africa and the African diaspora. Attendees could indulge in injera from Ethiopia, jollof rice from Nigeria, bunny chow and zebra from South Africa, and even jerk chicken from Jamaica. The impressive range of food highlighted the diversity of African food and ensured there was something available for all palates.
Although the festival had “food” in the title, it also gave festival goers a chance to explore art, music, fashion, and literature from Africa and the African diaspora. DJs from Europe and Africa played Afro-beats for dancing revelers whose delight could not be dampened even by intermittent rain. Inside the festival’s market, attendees admired the craftsmanship of handmade African jewelry and trendy multicolored fashion from the continent. There was also a section for attendees to peruse and purchase books from authors within the African community and a display of original works by artists of African descent.
The African Food Festival was an extraordinary celebration of African culture and an exemplary display of Berlin’s heralded multiculturalism.
