The Ethnologisches Museum will host a workshop with the New Zealand artist George Tamihana Nuku
April 09th, 2025On the 17th of May, the Ethnologisches Museum will host a workshop with the New Zealand artist George Tamihana Nuku.
George Tamihana Nuku is one of the most important contemporary artists of the New Zealand artistic movement. He is part of the Ngāti Kahungunu and Tūwharetoa tribes. In 2008 Nuku had his first solo exhibition in the UK The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Middlesborough. Since then he has exhibited in museums across Europe.
His artworks contain elements of both tradition and contemporary, as for his sculptures he is inspired by traditional elements of Māori culture, while at the same time they contains current topics, such as decolonisation.
On 17 May, a workshop for 20 Berliners will be hold at the Oceania exhibition area of the Ethnologisches Museum in the Humboldt Forum. Nuku will hold the workshop to show to the participants how to create new art from old materials, using the method of upcycling.
George Nuku artworks inspire the viewer to inquire about the relationship between man, nature and culture. Thanks to his profound knowledge of Māori culture, it is possible to come closer to the culture of this indigenous population of New Zealand.
His research into the relationship between man and nature is particularly sensitive in the times we are living in. It asks us to pause from our fast-paced lives and reflect on the importance of our surroundings. The workshop on the 17th of May will be the perfect opportunity to have a closer look at this topic.
