The anniversary not only allows us to examine Kafka's work and life from fresh perspectives but also provides an opportunity to delve into his cultural legacy.

June 3rd 2024 marks the anniversary of the death of the writer and Prague native Franz Kafka. Growing up in the multicultural city of Prague, Kafka experienced the cross-fertilization and overlapping of Czech, German and Jewish cultures. These exactly intertwined connections will be explored, deployed and reflected on during the course of the year-long project spread across Germany, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.

The program in Germany provides an opportunity to look at the Czech-German cultural heritage and the mutual exchange and influence of both cultures and nations right up to the present day.

What events will happen in Berlin?

  1. You Have Come and Stay: themed evening

The evening includes a panel discussion about the Kafka memorial year from an Austrian, Czech and German perspective, a look at the last weeks of the author's life. The evening will conclude with a lecture exploring Kafka's humor, providing an insightful and in the Czech irony tradition contrasting wrap-up to the event.

  1. Franz Kafka – the Second Century

In the two-day event together with Kafka researchers, once again the phenomena of his fascination will be reflected on. In the black box, the filmed production of Ein Bericht für eine Akademie (A Report for an Academy) (1962), directed by Willi Schmidt can be rediscovered. A showcase exhibition shows how Kafka inspired other artists.
