Philippines Embassy Celebrates Independence Day with Renowned Pianist

The Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Maria Teresa Torres Almojuela, hosted a prestigious evening of music to commemorate the 128th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence. 

The event, held on 5 May 2026 at the historic Mendelssohn-Remise in Berlin, featured a performance by the internationally acclaimed Filipino concert pianist, Dr. Raul Sunico. The celebration served as a significant cultural diplomacy initiative, strengthening bilateral ties between the Philippines and Germany through the universal language of music.

The evening began with a formal reception at 17:30H, followed by the main program at 18:00H. Dr. Raul Sunico, recognized for his technical prowess and emotive interpretations, performed a curated selection of pieces that highlighted both classical mastery and Filipino heritage. The venue, House Mendelssohn, provided a fittingly storied backdrop for an evening dedicated to high art and national pride.

The high-profile guest list reflected the strength of international relations in the German capital, featuring notable figures such as Mr. Mark Donfried (bottom left), Director of the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy, and H.E. Maria Teresa Torres Almojuela (orange dress), Ambassador of the Philippines to Germany. The diplomatic corps was represented by H.E. Amb. Florencia Eugenia Vilanova de von Oehsen (middle left, grey dress), Ambassador of El Salvador; H.E. Amb. Pengiran Hajah Krtini Pengiran Haji Tahir (right, green suit), Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam; H.E. Amb. Ana Polak Petrič (to her left), Ambassador of Slovenia; and H.E. Amb.
