Official Celebrations of Portuguese culture and Portuguese-German relations

News from Berlin- From June 4th to June 8th the Portuguese Embassy in Berlin and the General Consulate of Portugal in Hamburg are organizing an official celebration for the Day of Portugal, the Day of Camões and Portuguese Communities, as well as the 50th Anniversary of the Portuguese Community in Germany. The event will be hosted in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, where the largest Portuguese community in Germany can be found, thriving with their businesses and cultural establishment since the sixteenth century, from Vasco de Gama to Amália Rodrigues.
Several important figures from the Portuguese and German representations will participate in these events, varying from artists to professors and governmental personalities.
The celebrations highlight the importance of the bilateral relationship between Portugal and Germany, putting focus on the opportunities offered by Economic Diplomacy and the role of Portugal as a bridge to other markets, as well as the successful integration of the Portuguese Community in German society and the continuous cultural exchanges between the two communities in the past decades.
In particular, on June 6th the 50th anniversary of the signing of the bilateral protocol between Germany and Portugal will be celebrated, which allowed the entry of Portuguese guest workers in the German territory. The event is called “The Past that makes Future”, and its aim is to enhance intergenerational, intercultural and multilingual dialogue between the Portuguese and German communities, to promote political education through a better knowledge of the past, present and future context in which the Portuguese immigrants live, as well as drawing attention to them through media coverage.
The event will take place in the Ethnographic Museum of Hamburg and Portuguese Ambassador in Berlin Dr. Luis Almeida Sampaio will attend the event, as well as other public figures such as the Deputy Christian Lang, President of the Luso-German Parliamentary Friendship Group, and José Cesário, Secretary of State of the Portuguese Communities.
