July 02nd, 2014
News from Berlin - On July 2nd, a new permanent exhibition “Resistance against National Socialism” will be opened to the public at The German Resistance Memorial Center in Mitte, Berlin.
The Center is a well known historical site of remembrance, aimed to provide a wide range of documentation on the fight against the National Socialist dictatorship in the period 1933-1945.
Seventy years ago on July 20 1944, the location of the Centre was the site of an attempted coup against Adolf Hitler made by resistance fighters, led by Colonel Claus Schenk Graf Von Stauffenberg.
The exhibition describes the Resistance through 18 topic areas with the support of interactive tools as media materials and audio guides available in different languages. All the funds for the realization of the new exhibition have been provided by the Berlin LOTTO Foundation and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture (Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien).
Berlin Mayor Wowereit and German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended the opening ceremony which took place yesterday. Merkel gave a speech at the exhibition remembering the courage of those men and women who fought in the Resistance and to whom we should all be grateful.
