Namibian Embassy in Berlin Celebrates 35 Years of Independence
A vibrant evening of music, diplomacy and dialogue highlights Namibia–Germany relations
July 20th, 2025On 12 May 2025, the Embassy of Namibia in Berlin hosted a festive gathering to mark the 35th anniversary of the country’s independence. The event brought together diplomats, members of the Namibian diaspora, and German officials in a joyful celebration of Namibia’s progress and the strong partnership between the two nations. Among the honored guests were Hon. Frans Kapofi, Namibia’s Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, and Germany’s new Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, Ms. Serap Güler.
In her remarks, Minister Güler extended warm congratulations on behalf of Foreign Minister Wadephul and noted the personal significance of the occasion: “This is my third working day in office, and one of my very first commitments as Germany’s new Minister of State. It is truly special to celebrate with you on this day of pride, remembrance, and hope.” She reflected on the historical symbolism of Namibia’s independence in March 1990—just months before German reunification—highlighting the shared values of unity and self-determination.
The event celebrated Namibia’s democratic journey and its growing role on the global stage, with special mention of the recent election of the country’s first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. “Namibia today stands as a respected actor in international diplomacy, a strong voice for multilateralism, and a key partner in global governance efforts,” said Güler, referencing the two countries’ recent collaboration on the UN Pact for the Future.
Germany and Namibia enjoy a broad and deep relationship that spans development cooperation, renewable energy initiatives, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties. From green hydrogen projects to city partnerships—such as Berlin and Windhoek, now celebrating 25 years of cooperation—the partnership reflects a shared vision for sustainable and inclusive development. Youth exchange programs, tourism, and academic initiatives further enrich this connection.
While the historical ties between the two nations are complex, both sides have taken meaningful steps toward reconciliation through open dialogue and cooperation. Minister Güler emphasized this, citing the “Joint Declaration” process and high-level visits as proof of mutual commitment. “We are aware of the historical responsibility that arises from our colonial past,” she said, “but our relationship is evolving into a true partnership—one built on shared priorities and shared futures.”
