The German Ambassador to Namibia extended an invitation to the Namibian's news very own Martha Mukaiwa to attend the 53rd Theatertreffen in Berlin, Germany in May. The renowned journalist will attend the festival from 9 to 15 May as part of the visitors' program of the German Federal Government. Every year in May, Germany's most important theatre festival brings together theatre-makers, journalists and guests from all over the world in Berlin. Together with festival directors, directors, theatre critics and theatre professionals from around the world, Mukaiwa will have the opportunity to familiarize herself with Berlin's theatre scene and the promotion of theatre in Germany.

The first Theatre Meeting took place 1964 and then again from 2003 to 2011, when the Theatre Meetings were passed to Iris Laufenberg. Since 2012, Yvonne Büdenhölzer who previously headed the Stückemarkt has taken the lead of the institution. There are now around the meeting a comprehensive program with discussions, award ceremonies, audience discussions, films, premiere parties and concerts. The television station 3sat reports in detail during the festival and shows performances partly directly on television.

The centerpiece of the Theatertreffen is formed by the ten “most notable productions,” which are chosen every year by an independent jury of critics from a possible 400 performances of the season. This summit of German-language theatre is divided into three event sections: the Theatertreffen Camp during the day ties in public and discursive events with visitors from the worlds of culture, politics and commerce, and forges links between theatre and current socio-political subjects (free admission). The central evening events comprise of the performances of the ten selected productions and the guest performances and readings of the Stückemarkt. At night, the Haus der Berliner Festspiele invites you to public discussions, premiere parties and concerts. What’s more, the International Forum and the Theatertreffen-Blog offer young theatre-makers and cultural journalists the opportunity to develop their professional experience.
