Croatian Embassy in Berlin Celebrates Statehood and Armed Forces Day
Ambassador Gordan Bakota Highlights Croatia's Path to Sovereignty and Partnership with Germany
July 24th, 2024On May 16, 2024, the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Berlin hosted a grand reception to celebrate Statehood Day and Armed Forces Day. The event brought together the Croatian community in Berlin along with friends and partners of the Republic of Croatia.
Ambassador Gordan Bakota addressed the numerous guests, emphasizing Croatia's steadfast role as a reliable and credible partner in various international forums, especially during these challenging global times. He reflected on Croatia's arduous journey to sovereignty, independence, and democracy, noting the nation's transformation from a victim of the Milošević regime's aggression to a victorious homeland war survivor, and eventually a member of both the EU and NATO. Ambassador Bakota particularly highlighted the 15th anniversary of Croatia's NATO membership and the significant investments in its armed forces, including the acquisition of Rafale fighter jets.
Furthermore, Ambassador Bakota stressed the importance of the EU enlargement policy as a tool for stability and security in Europe, welcoming the positive decision to start accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina, a process to which Croatia has been a continuous contributor. He also highlighted the strong economic ties between Croatia and Germany, especially in the technology and tourism sectors, and extended special thanks to the Croatian diaspora in Germany. The approximately 500,000 Croats living in Germany play a vital role as entrepreneurs, scientists, and cultural figures in promoting Croatia.
The ambassador also mentioned the upcoming European Football Championship in Germany, which is expected to bring numerous Croatian fans to the country. He noted that the city of Neuruppin near Berlin will host the Croatian football team and expressed his gratitude to the city's mayor and delegation for their hospitality towards the Vatreni.
The reception also served as an opportunity to showcase Croatia's tourism offerings. Ivana Bošković, Director of the Cultural Center of the Bol Municipality, greeted the guests and presented the cultural, economic, and gastronomic attractions of the island of Brač, inviting everyone to visit.
Guests at the reception had the chance to explore the CRONAVES photo exhibition set up in the embassy, which highlights Croatia's maritime heritage, showcasing the sea, islands, traditional shipbuilding, and the people. The exhibition connects various coastal locations with Croatia's rich maritime culture. The event was musically enriched by the Klapa Morbin from the island of Brač, adding a touch of traditional Croatian music to the evening.
This celebration not only marked important national holidays but also reinforced the deep and dynamic relationship between Croatia and Germany, highlighting shared history, cultural ties, and mutual respect. The event underscored the Croatian Embassy's commitment to fostering strong diplomatic and cultural connections with Germany.
